Tesla reports fatal crash in California involving Model S and autopilot on

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) following a February 2023 crash involving

electric car Tesla Model S requested additional information from the manufacturer. Elon Musk's company responded to the regulator's request with a delay.

What is known

February 2014 Tesla Model Scollided with an ambulance. The fatal accident occurred in Contra Costa County, California. The company confirmed that the electric vehicle was being controlled by the Autopilot driver assistance system at the time of the accident. The Tesla Model S was speeding at 114 km/h just prior to impact, 9 km/h over the speed limit.

Beginning in the summer of 2021, the NHTSA is collectinginformation about accidents involving vehicles with active autonomous driving systems. After Tesla's statement, the number of accidents involving autopilot increased to 66. American activists demand that the authorities tighten the rules for driver assistance systems.
