Researchers from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory announced the discovery of a new world resembling
TOI 700 is a small cold dwarfan M-class star located about 100 light-years from the Sun in the constellation Dorado. Due to the star's size and brightness, TOI 700's habitable zone is much closer than that of the Sun. Astronomers have previously discovered three other planets orbiting this star.
TOI 700 e makes one revolution around itsstars in about 28 days and is believed by scientists to be tidally locked, that is, always facing the star on one side. Similarly, for example, the Moon is blocked by the Earth's tide. The new planet is in the optimistic habitable zone, a distance at which, at some point in the planet's history, liquid water could have been present on the surface.
According to the authors of the study, this is the seconda planet in the habitable zone near the star TOI 700, discovered by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). In 2020, the same team of researchers discovered in the TOI 700 system the planet TOI 700 d, which is about 10% larger than the new one and orbits the star at a greater distance in 37 days.
Researchers note that the presence of twoPotentially habitable worlds similar to Earth make this star system interesting to study as a laboratory for searching and investigating the possibility of the emergence of life. Scientists will continue to study the worlds with additional tools.
