The amount of massive air pollution in Russia reaches a maximum in 17 years

The analytical service of the international audit and consulting network FinExpertiza recorded in the first

half of 2021—181 sources of high and extremely high air pollution. The last time this amount of air pollution was recorded was 17 years ago.

In the first six months of 2021, the number ofthe recorded cases of high and extremely high air pollution have increased fourfold compared to the same period last year. In total, 181 incidents were registered in the country, which is the absolute maximum for the first half of at least the last 17 years.

The bulk of hazardous pollution was located in:

  • Krasnoyarsk region,
  • Orenburg region,
  • Arkhangelsk region,
  • Buryatia,
  • Samara region, 
  • Khakassia.

High pollution is understood to mean the content of one or more substances in the atmospheric air, exceeding the maximum permissible concentration by 10 or more times.

Extremely high pollution occurs,when the maximum permissible concentration is exceeded 20-29 times within two days, or 30-49 times within eight hours, or 50 or more times with a one-time excess.
