Korean scientists have created and shown on video a chameleon robot capable of merging with its environment.
Chameleons and cuttlefish have long mastered the abilitymerge with the environment. For humans, however, invisibility has always been the realm of science fiction and even fairy tales. South Korean scientists have finally created a cloaking technology that is capable of automatically merging an object into its surroundings in real time.
Development is a relativelya simple active camouflage that scientists demonstrate on video using a chameleon robot. They describe the innovation as flexible color modeling technology that helps the robot blend in with its surroundings in real time.
In the video, the chameleon-like robot changes colorfrom red to blue to green when walking on various solid-colored surfaces. As Futurism notes, this is not the first attempt at creating active camouflage, but the Korean development is different from most others, which often consist of a huge number of multi-colored pixels on the surface.
The new approach is “extremelycomplex” from a technological point of view. The color-changing material of the chameleon robot consists of several layers of displays. They stack on top of each other and change color, using nanotechnology sensors to detect and display the colors of the environment.
Scientists have big plans to develop this technology. In the future, there are plans to integrate artificial intelligence. Apparently, South Korean scientists have no time to think about the consequences of such integration.
“We plan to conduct furtherresearch into a sensor system based on artificial intelligence, which recognizes not only the color, but also the shapes of various surrounding objects. Thanks to this, we can develop a more advanced artificial camouflage system”, – say the researchers.
