The Earth and the Sun on January 2 will be at a minimum distance from each other

As representatives of the Moscow Planetarium said, on January 2, 2021, the distance between the Earth and the Sun

will be equal to 147 million km.

On Saturday, January 2, the Earth will be at itsclose distance from the Sun, which will allow us to observe the largest disk of the Sun in 2021. <…> The apparent diameter will be at its maximum, causing the celestial body's disk to appear 3% larger than at the beginning of July, when this distance is at its maximum.

On this day, the Earth will be at perihelion:this is the point of the orbit closest to the Sun, which our planet passes once a year. The farthest point, aphelion, the Earth passes at the beginning of July, being at a distance of more than 152 million km from the Sun.

The planetarium recalled that the Earth makes a complete revolution around the Sun in 365 days 6 hours 9 minutes 10 seconds. The Earth moves around the Sun in an elliptical orbit with an average speed of 29.765 km / s.

Also on the night of January 2-3 there will be the first New Year's starfall - at the peak of the Quadrantids meteor shower, up to 110 meteors are expected per hour.
