Scientists are sounding the alarm and say that an important for natural processes and unique ecosystem canbegin to deteriorate intensively.

The main cause of reef discoloration is burststemperatures since 1998, the hottest year on record. But that was at that time, now the temperature rises and the reef loses its color every time - in 2016, 2017 and 2020. This year the reef has lost 98% of its color, which has not yet been observed.

Scientists talk about a kind of chain reaction: due to a sharp increase in temperature, corals lose algae living in their tissues and, as a result, their colors.

Experts also note that there is norapid recovery of this ecosystem, including from outbreaks of crown of thorns starfish, eating corals, and cyclones. Both factors, according to experts, are becoming more and more destructive due to climate change.
