The hypothesis was confirmed: fast radio bursts come from magnetars

Fast radio bursts are one of the little-studied and unusual phenomena observed by astrophysics. This

powerful short (several milliseconds long) periodic pulses of radio emission, the source of which is located at a great distance from the Earth. 

At the moment we only know that everyone is fastradio bursts are very powerful and are located at a very large distance from the source. Because of this, astronomers previously assumed that radio bursts produce the most powerful cataclysms in the Universe—for example, mergers of pairs of neutron stars or pulsars and black holes.

In a new work, an international team of scientists fromSAI MSU, HSE, Ioffe Institute of Physics and Technology and NASA explained why magnetars rarely produce powerful and noticeable fast radio bursts on Earth.

To understand this, the authors analyzeddata collected at the end of April 2020 by the Russian “Konus” instrument installed on the American Wind satellite. The device recorded  a burst of X-ray emission at the same time that the CHIME and FAST radio telescopes detected two fast radio bursts from SGR 1935+2154.

Simultaneous recording of bursts servesthe strongest argument in favor of the magnetar hypothesis, and also allows us to say that at least a significant proportion of fast radio bursts are generated by powerful flares of extragalactic magnetars.

The flash that accompanied the fastradio burst, was strongly skewed towards hard X-rays, therefore, scientists believe, earlier it was not possible to fix other fast radio bursts of galactic origin. This requires very exotic conditions.
