The virtual championship will be held with the support of five international sports federations and game creators.
The series announced by the IOC will be the first in historycommittee for the official competition in physical and non-physical virtual sports. It is noteworthy that the games must have a special Olympic license. These include disciplines such as baseball, cycling, rowing, sailing and motorsport. Tournament operator DreamHack will handle esports marketing and production. A special Olympic virtual series will take place ahead of the Tokyo Summer Games, May 13-23, in a statement.
As each event will be hosted by a different international federation, they will all differ in rules, format and sports platforms.
Here is the composition of the federations and what games they will play (all that is known so far):
- World Baseball Softball Confederation will host the 2020 Konami eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball Competition
- Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile will host Gran Turismo competitions
- World Sailing will host a virtual regatta competition, an online sailing and regatta simulator.
- Union Cycliste Internationale will host a competition for Zwift that offers virtual cycling and running courses for use with indoor exercise.
- Not officially attached to World Rowing yeta game; the press release only vaguely stated that there would be an “open format.” A public relations representative told The Verge that details about the World Rowing competition will be released soon.
In future virtual series it will be possibleinvolve more sports. FIFA, Fédération Internationale Basketball, Fédération Internationale Tennis and World Taekwondo "confirmed their excitement and commitment to explore the possibility of inclusion in future editions of the OVS," the IOC said.
