The facility, opened on June 24, was built onsubsidies from the Japanese government in the amount of 19 billion yen ($140.52 million). It is designed to help TSMC develop next-generation semiconductor technologies. At the same time, the government of the country recently decided to subsidize also a semiconductor plant in Kumamoto Prefecture.

Nikkei Asia has said that anything developed from the R&D project will be owned by TSMC Japan 3DIC. Despite the subsidies, NEDO will not own the intellectual property rights. If new products come to the R&D center, the current system will allow TSMC to take them to Taiwan without giving anything back to Japan.
