Monkeypox has long been known to humanity, but in May 2022, it expanded beyond endemic areas for the first time
In a report published in a medical journal,A confirmed case has been reported in an Italian greyhound whose owners had previously been found to have monkeypox virus. The first symptoms in the dog appeared 13 days after the diagnosis of the disease in the owners. It is reported that the body of the dog, which had previously been ill with nothing, developed mucocutaneous lesions, including pustules on the abdomen. In addition, the researchers diagnosed a small ulcer in the animal's anus.

Scientists conducted PCR testing on samplesobtained from the affected skin, as well as smears from the oral cavity and anus. Research has confirmed infection with the monkeypox virus. In addition, genetic sequencing showed that the dog was found to have exactly the strain that has been actively spreading since May 2022. At the same time, the virus that infected the owner and the pet coincides 100%. This excludes a third-party source of infection.
According to the owners of the Italian greyhound, the dog oftensleeps with them. At the same time, after the discovery of the virus in them, people limited the contact of the animal with other dogs and animals. The researchers note that although no case of reverse transmission has yet been confirmed, pets may act as carriers of the virus. For example, the transmission of the virus from a prairie dog to humans has been previously described, and in endemic countries, wild animals often act as a carrier of the virus.
According to WHO data as of August 12, 2022, from January 1This year, there were 32,760 confirmed and 138 probable monkeypox cases worldwide. At the same time, at least 12 deaths are known. Information about the disease was received by WHO from 91 countries on all six continents. On July 23, the organization declared the outbreak a global emergency.
The rapid spread of the virus requirestaking new measures that will limit the increase in cases. As one such remedy, the authors of the new study suggest isolating pets from humans diagnosed with monkeypox.
Previously, Hi-Tech spoke in detail about the monkeypox virus and a new outbreak of the disease.
