A new document obtained by Motherboard provides details on how Amazon tracksand fixes
Documents show that workers can receive a written warning for accumulating 30 minutesfree time per day once within one year.They can be fired if they accumulate 120 minutesnon-working time for one day or if they accumulate 30 minutesnon-working hours on three different days within one year.The examples and sample spreadsheets provided in the documents show what Amazon tracksTo the minute, the amount of time spent by individual workers in the toilet and "disturbances" such as "talking"with another Amazon employee," going to the wrong floor of the warehouse and, as an example, an unaccounted for 11-minute period where the employee "doesn't remember" what they were doing.
Each shift, "managers will use TOT to identify and engage the primary offender," the manual says.As an example, Amazon demonstrates a brief description of how a managermay ask their employees to report on how long they used the restroom at certain times of the day: "An Amazon employee understandsA.A. stated that he had been in the toilet for 10 TOT.Instructed A.A. on TOT policy."
In one of the documents, Amazon explains to employees the purpose of its TOT policy, saying that "the commitment of workers to perform assigned tasks hascrucial to being the most customer-centric company on Earth."
Amazon did not respond to a request for comment or questions about whether these rules apply to the JFK8 warehouse or other Amazon warehouses nationwide.
