The researchers proposed their adaptedmethod, in which all the work is done by a small device the size of a pen: when creating, the authors were inspired by an electronic barbecue lighter. Every time the lighter clicks, it generates a short pulse of electricity to ignite the flame.

Scientists took the design of a barbecue lighter and added a tiny spring-loaded mechanism inside it.

In addition to the lighter, the key innovation was the tightly positioned electrodes and the use of extremely short microneedles.

As a result, the authors created a small device that is comparable in functionality to bulky machines. It can be mass produced at low cost. 

Combining a tiny electroporation pulse with microneedle electrodes created an efficient electrical interface with the skin and further reduced cost and complexity.
