Biologists studied livers transplanted between 1990 and 2022 and found 25 unusual organs that remained
Researchers studied 253 406liver transplants and identified a special group of organs that lived, in total, more than 100 years. This is the total age before and after transplantation. Some organs functioned for 108 years.
Scientists were especially surprised by the fact that the “100-year-old”livers were transplanted from donors with an average age of 84.7 years. It is generally believed that organs from younger donors last longer, but the results of the current study paint a completely different picture, especially in the case of liver transplantation.
Since the liver is a regenerative organ(capable of self-healing), the small and remaining parts of the liver in the bodies of the donor and recipient grow into a fully functional healthy organ. However, not every transplant operation is successful, since the recipient's body can reject the transplant due to various factors. For example, sometimes the genetic makeup of the donor liver is very different from the liver being replaced, and this causes the recipient's body's immune system to attack and reject the transplanted organ.
Another factor that leads to failureliver transplant or limits the age of the transplanted organ, is associated with high transaminase levels. This enzyme is important for the normal functioning of the liver and the removal of toxins from the human body. During the study, scientists discovered that livers from elderly donors had low levels of transaminases. This makes them more compatible and durable compared to grafts from young donors.
