The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be released on PlayStation 5: expect a stealth action game with personality conflict mechanics

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was announced back in 2019, but only now the developers have finally decided

with platforms.

What is known

Daedalic Entertainment, developers of The Lordof the Rings: Gollum were interviewed by EDGE for the February issue of the magazine. In the conversation, the creators of the game said that the project will be released in 2021 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC.

In addition to the platforms, the developers have revealed more details about the game's main character, Gollum. The team decided to create their own version of the character, since the books did not describe it accurately enough.

“Tolkien initially did not give the exact dimensions of Gollum. In the first illustrations he is gigantic! He’s like a monster emerging from a swamp,” art director Matthias Fischer.

At the same time, Daedalic will not upset players, who have only seen the films, even though Gollum will not be an exact copy of the “film” incarnation. It is possible that the developers will take the version from the film adaptations of the books as a basis, but will make their own adjustments.

Fisher also confirmed that Nazgûl, the ringwraith, will appear in The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. Unfortunately, the developers did not say what role the character will take in the game.

Gameplay-wise, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will be a stealth action game. Since two personalities are fighting in Gollum’s head, the developers decided to introduce appropriate mechanics.

"It's not just a choice to be Sméagol orGollum, because for Gollum, as a subject, it is not so simple. Each person is attacked by the other and each must defend himself. You can have two, three or four conflicts in each chapter that lead to the final resolution. And at this moment, for example, the final decision will be more difficult for Sméagol, if you have always fought for Gollum’s side,” said game designer Martin Wilks.

Finally, Daedalic CEO Carsten Fichtelmann confirmed that the studio has received a long-term contract. Therefore, there are plans to make two or three more games, but this time about other characters.
