The authors of a new scientific work used a topological axion insulator - a unique quantum state
During the study, scientists implementedthe insulating state of axions by combining metallic materials, and then studied the magnetoelectric response they create. As a result, physicists created a chip from manganese-bismuth telluride, organizing these materials into two-dimensional layers.
The new technology makes it possible to quickly and without significant energy losses manipulate the magnetic properties of a storage device thanks to the use of a topological axion insulator.
The topological axionic insulator hasan unusual ability that allows it to have very strong metallic or conductive electrons on its surface, even though the bulk of the material is insulating. Previously, this was predicted only theoretically, but now it is realized experimentally.
“It's like discovering a new element. And we know there will be many interesting applications for this,” said physicist Arun Bansil, who led the research team.
Scientists believe this study haswidespread use in multiple technologies such as sensors, switches, computers, storage devices, etc. The integration of new topology materials into future devices can make storing, transporting and manipulating data faster, more reliable, and more efficient.
