Fragments of the letter that have been deciphered confirm the deterioration of relations between Francis I and Charles V in 1547, who signed a peace treaty three years earlier.
Despite the pact, the rulers tried“weaken each other,” the study authors explain. So much so that the letter contained information about a possible plot to assassinate Charles V, which was rumored to be brewing in France. As experts explain, the “fear” of the monarch is felt in the letter.
