The smartphone behind the wheel turned out to be more dangerous than drinking

Analytics company Zendrive shared statistics on smartphones and related accidents. It turned out,

that gadget mania is more dangerous than drunk driving.

Entertaining numbers

The statistics were obtained taking into account almost 260billion kilometers of road. Last year, drivers with a smartphone in their hands caused the death of 6,227 pedestrians in the United States out of a total of 35 thousand. At the same time, they became 10% more likely to be distracted, which seriously reduces their driving skills: they ignore a third of the way, drive more slowly, brake and accelerate too late. According to the study, the level of reaction of such a driver corresponds to a person with a blood alcohol level of 0.8‰ (In Ukraine, the legal limit for driving is 0.2‰, in the USA - 0.5-0.8‰, depending on the state).

What further aggravates the situation is that suchThere are many more people driving than drunk people, and they are on the roads at the peak of traffic – from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Drunk drivers, in turn, are more likely to appear between midnight and 3 a.m. when the roads are empty.
