Thousands of jellyfish "captured" the coast of Israel: they penetrated hundreds of meters deep

The Mediterranean, near the port city of Haifa in northern Israel, is teeming withJellyfish, and in a huge

According to The Jerusalem Post, the sea is "dotted with thousands of white dots."The cluster extends to a depth of several hundred meters.

Representatives of the Israel Nature and Parks Authority(Nature and Parks Authority, NPA) used drones to assess the distribution of nomadic jellyfish (Rhopilema nomadica) in Haifa Bay. The agency posted the video on its website. The agency also advised people not to swim in the area due to the risk of painful stings.

The unusually high concentration of jellyfish is likely due to human activities. Pollution and climate change are among the reasons, the NPA said in a statement.

A sharp increase in the number of jellyfish this summercould be catastrophic for the marine ecosystem near coastal Haifa and even affect industry and tourism, Ruthie Yahel, NPA marine ecologist, said in a statement.

Nomadic jellyfish – the most common species of jellyfish in the waters near Haifa – are invasive species that inhabitin the tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Scientists suspect that they invaded the Mediterranean Sea from the Indian Ocean using the Suez Canal, a man-made waterway in Egypt that connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez.
