Three new subtypes of multiple sclerosis found with the help of AI

The researchers say their findings will help identify those people who are more likely to

will have a progression of the disease, and will help to more effectively predict treatment.

In their new work, scientists wanted to find outwhether there are any as-yet unidentified patterns in brain imaging that would best guide treatment choices and identify patients who would respond best to particular therapies.

Currently, multiple sclerosis is broadly classified into progressive and relapsing groups, which are based on the patient's symptoms. 

The authors decided to use AI to find subtypesmultiple sclerosis: the algorithm has identified three subtypes, which are defined by pathological abnormalities observed in brain images. All three are among the earliest abnormalities seen on MRI scans within each pattern.

Scientists believe this is an important step in predicting individual responses to therapy.
