Traces of ancient Tartessian civilization found

Archaeologists have discovered five life-size busts of human figures in Spain. According to

According to preliminary estimates, these are the first known images of the Tartessian people, the people who formed the ancient civilization that disappeared more than 2,500 years ago.

Carved stone faces that archaeologistsdated to the 5th century BC, found hidden inside a sealed pit in an adobe temple at Casas del Turunuelo, an ancient Tartessian settlement in southern Spain. According to the statement, the pieces were scattered among the bones of animals, mostly horses. It is believed that they were sacrificed.

“The unusual thing about the new find is that the images correspond to human faces,” explains Erika Lopez, a spokeswoman for the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

Archaeologists from the CSIC called this discovery“a paradigm shift in the interpretation of the Tartessians,” since this ancient civilization, which existed from approximately the 8th to 4th centuries BC, has long been considered an aniconic culture. Deities there were represented in the form of animals or plants, and people.

Of the figurative reliefs, two are nearly complete and likely depict female deities wearing earrings, which may be a tribute to the skilled jewelry skills of the Bronze Age people.

Although the Tartessians did not leave manyarchaeological records, experts know that they were skilled in jewelry making. For example, gold items similar to the earrings from the reliefs were discovered in two nearby Tartessian sites, Cancho Roano and La Mata. These locations were burned to the ground just like the newly discovered pit, but why and how these fires occurred remains a mystery, Vice reports.
