Twitter is testing a new concept of censoring tweet replies

Twitter is trying to limit the number of toxic replies to tweets (“replays” in the Twitter dialect) by providing

users have tools that will allow them to bemore active in their prevention. In the future, these tools may include a feature that allows you to filter potentially offensive replies, as well as a feature that allows you to limit replies from potentially unwanted accounts.

Twitter Senior Product Designer Paula Barcante has posted a preview of these features, which are just concepts for now, to get feedback from users.

Barkante reports that Twitter will ask you ifwhether you want to enable these controls if it detects potentially harmful replies to your tweets. If the reply filter is enabled, Twitter will not show you or anyone else – except the user who wrote the answer, – malicious tweets he posted. If you choose to restrict unwanted accounts, users who have recently violated the rules will not be able to reply to your tweets at all.

Since the process will be automated, Barkanteacknowledges that it may not always be accurate and may end up filtering out even relevant, non-problematic responses. That's why the company is also exploring the possibility of providing the ability to view filtered tweets and restricted accounts. Of course, the final tools may differ significantly from these preliminary versions if they are released.

When asked if there will be a response filter enabledwhether to filter out all tweets from an account or just those tweets that the site deemed potentially offensive, Barkante has not yet responded. She said that what she showed was just an "early concept that requires testing and iteration," and that Twitter would provide more details if it decides to launch the tools.
