Two robotic arms connected directly to the brain: a paralyzed man was able to eat himself

A new paper describes an innovative model that allows a person to control a pair of robotic arms using

thoughts, but without mental overstrain.

The interface from BMI provides a direct connection between the brain and the computer. The latter decodes neural signals and deciphers the information to give instructions for performing various external functions.

In a new experiment, with the help of signals from the brain, a person controlled two robotic arms. A paralyzed volunteer was able to eat dessert in less than 90 seconds using his brain and two robotic arms.

According to Dr. David Handelman, authorarticles and a senior robotics specialist at Intelligent Systems, the main achievement of their work is the combination of robot autonomy and limited human involvement. The machine does most of the work and allows the user to customize the robot's behavior as desired.
