UK and Germany to develop new ammunition with increased kinetic energy for Challenger 3 tanks

The United Kingdom and Germany have signed an agreement to begin a new phase of development of "more

lethal" ammunition for improved main battle tanks. The UK intends to upgrade 148 Challenger 2 tanks to the Challenger 3 level.

What is known

The UK and Germany will create a new projectile with increased kinetic energy (EKE). The new munition will improve the army's ability to counter current and future threats, officials said.

The joint program will start in 2023.Not only the upgraded Challenger 3 tanks, but also the German Leopard 2 combat vehicles, which are equipped with the L55A1 gun manufactured by Rheinmetall, will be able to use the new ammunition.

Germany and the UK are open toto include other interested parties in the project. They will also discuss possible cooperation for the creation of other tank shells of 120 mm caliber.

As for upgrading the Challenger 2 toChallenger 3 standard, for which the UK Department of Defense allocated £800 million ($1.1 billion). The work will take place at a joint venture between Rheinmetall and BAE Systems called RBSL. Full operational readiness is planned for 2030.
