As of April 17, 2021, 25 647 objects are known to be near the Earth.
Earlier in 2020, astronomical observatoriesfrom more than 40 countries collected data on nearly 39.5 million records of observations of asteroids and comets, and also discovered that 2,959 objects are approaching Earth—a record number.
Moreover, the orbit of 2180 asteroids on the list passes at a distance of no more than 8 million km from the Earth’s orbit.
It is estimated that only about 40% of the sizeable near-Earth objects have been identified.
