The technology will apply satellite maps andnotify large companies about gas emissions. Initially, MARS will target "big sources" in the energy sector. The system will be able to transmit information to the relevant authorities and track progress in reducing emissions.
The project partners were the UN Program forenvironment (UN's Climate and Clean Air Coalition) and the International Energy Agency. During the initial launch phase, MARS will receive funding from the US government, the European Commission and the Bezos Earth Fund.
According to the UN, MARS is the first publica system of this kind. In theory, it will accelerate the rate of reduction of methane emissions. Organization to make information about the sources of methane emissions within 45-75 days from the date of its receipt.
