Subsea Cloud has unveiled a commercial undersea data center off the US coast by the end of 2022.
Placing data center modules underwater will reduceelectricity consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 40%. It also reduces latency by allowing the data center to be located closer to metropolitan areas, many of which are located close to the coast.
Subsea founder Maxi Reynolds says the company can also deploy 1MW of power for 90% less than it would take to bring 1MW onshore.
“The savings will come from fewermaterials and less complexity in terms of deployment and maintenance,” said Reynolds. “In metropolitan areas, and in rural areas as well, building infrastructure is a complex and expensive task: land rights and permits need to be taken into account, and work is slower and can be more expensive.”
Installation in Port Angeles, which will be called "JulesVern" will consist of a single container that will look like a standard data center. According to Subsea, 800 servers can be placed inside.
The company is already open to any potential customers or partners. The leased facilities will be placed in shallow water, they will even be visible from the port.
