A bill banning New York State pet stores from selling dogs, cats and rabbits has passed
The bill, passed by the legislature this week, is mainly aimed at cracking down on large-scale animal farms.However, the bill does not directly target these enterprises – many of them existoutside of New York and therefore not subject to the jurisdiction of the State of New York.Instead, according to animal rights activists and lawmakers, it is aimed at pet stores that taketheir pets from such places.
"Right now, out-of-state puppy farms supply their puppies through intermediaries to pet stores in New York City, where they are sold as healthy puppies fromresponsible breeders," said Maureen Linehan, a spokesperson for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals HuffPost.
