User privacy and radically new design: the main thing about Android 12

With the new update to their Android operating system, the developers have clearly focused on design.

Significantly redesigned interface withadaptive colors distinguish the OS from previous versions. It is based on a new Material You design system with a set of principles that changes the already familiar Material Design, which debuted with Android 5.0 Lollipop back in 2014, and stands out for its emphasis on customization. Google calls Android 12 "the most significant design change in years." It is reported that in the future the company will continue to update its products to eventually bring them all to the same design denominator as Material You.

Interface, widgets,animation and lock screen

In Android 12, the system will automatically analyzecolors on the wallpaper of the screen. Based on the received data, it forms an individual palette of colors that are used in the interface and applications. Note that, first of all, the new functionality will be available on Pixel smartphones. By the way, the user can easily customize the color scheme individually generated on the basis of the wallpaper.

Google has reworked the widget API to improveuser interaction across platforms, Android skins and launchers. Notable features include the Google Sans font, flat icons, and more harmonious color palettes that together give the widgets a more modern look. Widgets in Android 12 have new dynamic controls that allow you to interact with various elements without launching the application itself. By the way, they can also automatically adjust the color of the background and elements to a part of the image on the desktop.

The style of many elements has changed - they have becomemuch larger and brighter. System animations have also been updated and smoother. All thanks to code optimization and graphics stack. When scrolling, the content stretches slightly, and when the smartphone is connected to the charger, waves of shadow and light appear. Also, the developers have added dynamic lighting when performing user actions. For example, the screen lights up on the right side after pressing the power button.

The quick settings screen is also essentialredesigned. Firstly, it became possible to turn off video and sound, as well as options for controlling smart home and Google Pay. Secondly, the notifications themselves on the notification screen have become larger, and their groups are merged (the already familiar Bubbles function).

Performance and resources

In the new OS, the time CPU usage in provisioningthe work of the main components of the system was reduced by 22%. At the same time, productive cores are now used 15% less. All this significantly increased the smoothness of the system animation. But not only. Also, the operating time of mobile devices without recharging has increased several times.

Security and privacy

Special attention is paid to this direction.First of all, there were indicators of the status of the microphone and camera with the ability to turn them off completely (at the system level) simultaneously for all applications from quick settings.

Кроме того, в обновлении представлена технология Private Compute Core. Essentially, this is a separate section for storing data from local machine learning algorithms (for example, the “now playing” functions for music and Gmail’s “smart replies”). Note that it is isolated from the rest of the OS.

Also, users have the opportunity to give applications not an exact, but an approximate location.

Other Updates

The update introduces the Car Key feature -"Digital key" for Android Auto. The NFC-based CarKey feature will allow you to use Google and Samsung smartphones as an electronic key to open your car. Initially it will work on BMW cars. It's also now possible to use smartphones to unlock Chromebooks and control Android TV as a remote control.

There are also improved accessibility featuresfor visually impaired people, taking long screenshots where you take a snapshot of an entire web page with scrolling down the screen, chat widgets that bring your loved ones to the home screen, and improved support for third-party app stores.
