Virtual reality affects the psyche and perception of reality

Researchers have previously observed evidence that virtual reality can induce feelings

alienation towards oneself and a feeling of detachment from reality - this is called depersonalization and derealization.

The researchers conducted a randomized trial. For this purpose, 80 volunteers were used who had not previously recorded psychiatric and/or neurological disorders.

They were invited to play The Elder Scrolls V:Skyrim with a VR headset or on a computer. Before this, the participants were tested on the German version of the Cambridge Depersonalization Scale (CDS), as well as after the game, one day later and one week later.

As a result, the authors found that sensationsdepersonalizations and derealizations were stronger immediately after the end of the game among both groups. But the symptoms were more pronounced in those who played Skyrim using a VR headset.

While the authors cannot say for sure, leadswhether the use of VR technology leads to the appearance of long-term symptoms, and also to what extent long-term stay in virtual reality leads to an intensification or weakening of the symptoms of depersonalization and derealization.
