VR headset simulates kissing and splashing mud on the face

Employees of the Future Interfaces Group of Carnegie Mellon University have configured a ready-made virtual reality headset,

to recreate the sensation of touching the user's face. In particular, she imitates kissing. To do this, engineers used ultrasonic transducers.

Using special equipment, researchersfocused the acoustic energy of the air on the lips and mouth, creating sensations such as tapping and continuous vibrations. “They can be animated along arbitrary three-dimensional trajectories,” write the authors of the development. “The effects can be felt not only on the lips, but also on the teeth and tongue.”

This is the first time researchers have integrated haptic technology into a headset for use in the mouth. 

The engineers also created many other sensory demonstrations. As a result, the headset can be used to feel raindrops, splashes of mud and crawling bugs on your face.
