Watch a robot that washes clothes, washes dishes, and pours wine

Samsung's new robot is called Bot Handy and, according to the company, is designed to become "an extension of a person in the kitchen, in

living room and wherever he might need help around the house,” Sebastian Sung, president of Samsung Research, said at the Samsung CES press conference today.

It is unclear at this point how much Bot Handyclose to entering the market. Samsung hasn't announced a price or release date, and the company has previously used CES to showcase futuristic-looking robots that are more of a concept than a real product. The robot is described as “under development”.

In its current form, Bot Handy isa tall, thin, black and white robot with two large digital eyes that change facial expressions when it moves. The robot has one arm that can rotate at three points—essentially the shoulder, elbow, and wrist—with a clamp arm at the end. Cameras are installed on top of the robot’s body and arm for object recognition. The robot can move around a room on what appears to be a rotating base, turn from side to side, and climb up to reach higher objects.

Samsung says the robot will be able to assessthe material from which various objects are made, and grab them with the necessary force. It is also assumed to be able to handle objects of different sizes, weights and shapes.
