Watch live as a bus-sized asteroid approaches Earth

The video broadcast from the Virtual Telescope project will begin today, April 26, 2022, at 21:30 Moscow time.

The asteroid is expected to reach its minimum distance after midnight, around 0:52 Moscow time.

Asteroid 2022 HB1 was discovered on April 24the size, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is about 12 m, which is comparable to a bus. The researchers estimate the minimum distance this object will approach Earth at 0.00134 AU. This is approximately 200,461 km.

Despite such close distance, thisthe asteroid is not considered potentially dangerous; it is not large enough for this. Space objects with a minimum intersection distance of the Earth's orbit of 0.05 AU are considered potentially dangerous. or less and an absolute magnitude of 22 or more (over 140 m). Researchers believe that smaller objects are not capable of causing widespread damage when falling to Earth.

Virtual Telescope is a project of the AstronomicalBellatrix Observatory in Italy. Observatory employees provide access to researchers and ordinary users to control several robotic telescopes via the Internet. And besides, the project team organizes online broadcasts with comments from observatory experts, which everyone can watch.
