What can we expect from the Chinese space program in the coming years

At the fifth meeting of the 13th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference

senior researcher Wu Weiren spoke about China's space ambitions for the next thirty years. Discuss

They include a return missionsamples from Mars, planned for the mid or early 2030s, the new Long March 9 spacecraft for crewed flights and deep space exploration, as well as missions to the outer edges of the solar system.

Weiren said that Chinese engineersare working through the technical challenges needed to carry out the Mars sample return mission, which will be more complex than the successful Chang'e-5 lunar mission. First, a spacecraft will land on Mars, carrying special equipment on board. Lifting from the surface of Mars with the collected samples will require a more powerful and heavier rocket than the Ascender used for the Chang'e-5 mission, due to the stronger gravitational influence of the Red Planet. The rocket will then deliver the samples to the Martian orbiter, which in turn will launch a vehicle to deliver the samples back to Earth.

In the long term, we want to sendspacecraft to explore the edge of our solar system, which is at a distance of about 15 billion kilometers from us, until 2049 in time for the centenary of the People's Republic of China
