What is the uniqueness of the liver compared to other organs

A team of scientists led by Dr. OlafBergmann from the Center for Regenerative Therapy Dresden (CRTD) at the Dresden University of Technology found out whether the ability of the liver to repair itself deteriorates with age. To do this, they studied the condition of the liver of several people who died at the age of 20 to 84 years. The experts found that the liver cells of all people were about the same age.

Dr. Bergmann points out that in fact, a person's liver is never more than three years old. The process of renewal of liver cells occurs even in the elderly.

However, in fact, not all liver cellsupdated so often. A certain part of cells can live for 10 years and only then renew themselves. Such cells contain more DNA than ordinary (“typical”) cells. For example, four or eight sets of chromosomes, compared to two sets, as is most often the case.

"Typical" cells, in addition, are updated once a year. But cells with a rich set of DNA can live up to 10 years.
