Apparently, this business model was not entirely viable. At least, this follows from the fact that very soon the service will again become paid.

According to insiders, in the parent company,which owns WhatsApp, an entirely new division has begun to take shape. Its main goal will be the development of paid options for social networks and the messenger.

Perhaps the company was motivated to take such a step bythat in April 2021, iOS 14.5 introduced a feature that prevents apps and sites, including WhatsApp, from tracking user activities and collecting data about them by default.
