Portrait mode is now available on almost every modern phone. And there are users for whom
Comparison
So we have Pixel 4 XL, iPhone 11 Pro Max,Galaxy Note 10+ and LG G8X ThinQ. They have different camera options, in particular this year the Pixel has a telephoto lens, the iPhone has three cameras at its disposal (it uses a telephoto lens for portraits). The Galaxy also has a triple camera, and on it you can use either the main lens or the telephoto lens for taking portraits. And finally, LG — the only smartphone that does not have a telephoto lens and shoots portraits with the main camera.
Below are real photos taken on these smartphones.
Scene 1
In this first shot, the Pixel 4 XL delivers a crisp image with excellent dynamic range. This photograph looks filled with color and life, and is difficult to criticize.
The iPhone, on the other hand, has much less detail, a lot of sunlight, which makes the whole photo cloudy and blurry, and skin tones are unnaturally warm with a yellow-orange tone.
Galaxy Note 10+ has the least amount of detail since everything looks pretty foggy. The colors have lost their brightness in this photo and appear pale, devoid of vitality.
Photos LG G8X is absolutely the worst ofall. The phone only has a wide camera, which it uses for portraits, and this is definitely not a good idea, since the proportions in this photo look erroneous. The dynamic range here is terrible: the brighter, the left side of the image is completely blurred.
Points:
- Pixel 4 XL: 9/10
- iPhone 11 Pro: 8/10
- Galaxy Note 10+: 7/10
- LG G8X: 5/10
Scene 2
In the next scene we see a great photo, made on Pixel. The iPhone photo also looks good, but we'd say it's a little overexposed and lacks the detail the Pixel offers. The Galaxy Note 10+, again, has very pale colors and lacks detail compared to the first two. Finally, LG made another unsuccessful attempt at taking a portrait. The amount of blur in the background doesn't seem to be enough, but the worst part is that the white T-shirt is completely faded.
Points:
- Pixel 4 XL: 8.5
- iPhone 11 Pro: 8
- Galaxy Note 10+: 7
- LG G8X: 5
Scene 3
We see the same picture againrepeated in this series of shots: a slightly underexposed image from Pixel, a yellow tone on the iPhone with a brighter and more fun exposure, soft details on the Galaxy and poor dynamic range and an inappropriate wide lens for portraits from LG. This is all reflected in the ratings below.
Points:
- Pixel 4 XL: 8
- iPhone 11 Pro: 8
- Galaxy Note 10+: 7
- LG G8X: 6
Scene 4
Here, the Pixel succeeds again. Richer colors with the greatest depth. The iPhone took second place, and then the Galaxy again goes in the same direction with softer details and paler colors than the rest. The LG photo is too contrasty and doesn't look as good as the rest.
Points:
- Pixel 4 XL: 8
- iPhone 11 Pro: 7.5
- Galaxy Note 10+: 6.5
- LG G8X: 5.5
Scene 5
Here we see something peculiar:The white balance in a Pixel photo is completely wrong, making the image appear orange. This is where the iPhone comes out on top: It captures the most balanced image, with good colors and a good amount of detail. The Galaxy photo isn't bad on its own, but again it suffers from blurriness, soft detail and pale colors. LG fails again.
Points:
- Pixel 4 XL: 6
- iPhone 11 Pro: 8
- Galaxy Note 10+: 7
- LG G8X: 4
Scene 6
Here Pixel wins again, and so do we.I like the clear details. iPhone turns the entire image yellow. tonality, Galaxy again features pale colors and soft details. But LG takes a pretty decent photo this time since there is no glare and it manages to control the colors.
Points:
- Pixel 4 XL: 8
- iPhone 11 Pro: 6.5
- Galaxy Note 10+: 6
- LG G8X: 6
Which phone makes the best portrait photos?
So … do we have a winner?
Pixel 4 XL: 47.5
iPhone 11 Pro: 46
Galaxy Note 10+: 40.5
LG G8X: 31.5
Yes, the Pixel 4 XL wins this test by a small margin. In addition to one case where he made a mistake with white balance, he shot images with the best dynamic range and the best amount of detail.
iPhone 11 Pro took second place:its images are quite good, but we found that most of the photos had an annoying yellowish tint. Galaxy Note 10+ takes third place. Finally, the LG G8X rounds out this list.
