Why are sugar substitutes harmful?

A recent randomizedA controlled study has shown that regular consumption of sucralose and saccharin can alter the gut microbiome and increase the body's response to sugar. That is, sweeteners changed the composition of microbes in the intestines, and their glucose tolerance was impaired.

Meanwhile, other artificial sweeteners,such as aspartame and stevia did not have the same effect. However, recent studies have also shown that people who drink aspartame-sweetened diet soda are twice as likely to be obese as those who don't.
