Now common cats (Felis catus) are consideredalien species due to being domesticated in the Middle East, and invasive due to "negative impact on local biodiversity". In explaining their decision, the scientists cite a study showing that cats in Poland kill and eat millions of mammals and birds every year.

The researchers noted that according to the criteria forinvasive and alien cat species corresponds to the new title "100%". Cat owners and lovers have already expressed outrage at the new classification, fearing it would provoke animal cruelty.
