Why does everyone want to be in IT and does everyone need to become programmers

Everyone needs a number

Not all job seekers understand what a digital profession is. It is mistakenly assumed that

These are specialties related to the IT field. In fact, a digital profession is one that is directly related to digital technologies or that uses various digital solutions: information systems, knowledge bases, analytics services, and so on.

It happens to separate digital and non-digital professionsdifficult. For example, a landscape designer develops a site plan in a computer program. The work seems to be digital, but its result is in the real world: in the form of plants, trees and paths. Engineers are in the same situation. In fact, they are now representatives of the digital profession, but their final decision is not in digital.

Digital or  digital professions are becomingin demand because the external environment is rapidly changing. More and more people are getting involved in the world of the digital economy: making purchases in online stores, using services and applications. Companies are forced to change and become partially digital in order to compete.

This explains the demand for servicesdigital specialists. Since 2010, the number of vacancies in this area in Russia has increased by 1,561%. The most demanded among them are IT specialties. They are also the most paid in Russia. The minimum salary for an IT specialist is 100,000 rubles.

Seeing the shortage of personnel in the labor market, as well aswages, many people are thinking about changing their profession to digital. They are ready to master it from scratch. In March-April 2022, in online schools specializing in such training, demand increased by a record 30-50% compared to previous months. People want to get an IT specialty that will allow them to increase their income and guarantee employment.

In increasing the number of IT specialistsThe state is also interested. Therefore, it launched the “Digital Professions” program together with leading online platforms (GeekBrains, Skillbox and others) and IT companies (Yandex, 1C and others). The program allows you to take a training course in a new digital specialty with a discount, the amount of which can reach 100%.

IT for the most conscious

Is it worth it for everyone to “go into IT” is a big question.Imagine: a man is 30 years old, he lives in Italy in a small town. She has been helping her father in the family pizzeria for 15 years. Everything is the same as it was 15 years ago. Things are going well, there are many customers. Does he need to think about IT? This is a matter of his inner feelings and assessment of the situation. Does he enjoy doing what he does? Does he want to change careers? Can a pizzeria be left without customers? If yes, under what circumstances?

On the other hand, technology can be usefulfor the business of this resident of Italy. For example, in his restaurant there is no possibility of online orders and online booking, there is no online promotion. So far, everything is fine due to the quality of the product, atmosphere and reputation. But does that mean it will always be like this? At some point, more advanced establishments that use modern technologies in their work may take the lead.

To define your professionaltrajectory, first of all, you need to understand your own desires. Sometimes you ask a person elementary questions, like: “What would you like to have?” And he can't answer them. Why study something new, if he does not even understand why he needs new knowledge and a new profession?

Before switching from a conventional profession to a digital oneIt's important to be really honest with yourself. Ask yourself the question: am I ready to work, spend time and money on mastering a new specialty, and then do a quality job.

It should be borne in mind that each specialty alsodevelops, even if it appeared relatively recently. And its representatives should change, become stronger. Employee skills become obsolete five years after they are acquired, especially when it comes to IT.

The best version of yourself

To be a sought-after specialist,It is not necessary to change your profession. You can develop your own competencies within the specialty in which you already work. And taking into account modern technologies, improve your level of digitalization. In matters of personal development, it is better to pay attention to the following aspects:

  • Ability to work and perform daily work, regardless of external conditions. To do this, you need to calmly respond to changing circumstances. In other words, you need emotional stability and a real perception of what is happening.
  • Critical thinkingwill allow you to understand what is really important to yourself and other people.
  • At least understandfundamentals of economics and marketing. To work in many fields of activity, it is necessary to know how the exchange of goods and services works, how the market is formed and trends are born, how the audience reacts to them.
  • Mastering new skills in IT. Here, in my opinion, you need to start with the basics. And in fact, few people own these basics. Knowing how to use YouTube or VKontakte does not mean owning a computer.

For example, a very useful skill that is requiredalmost everyone - the ability to type blindly. This dramatically improves the speed and quality of any typing tasks on the computer. But if you ask your friends which of them can type blindly, it turns out that almost no one can.

The same goes for the basics of working on a computer.Surprisingly, many people are afraid to approach the computer, they do not know how to perform even basic tasks on NCM. But this skill eliminates psychological barriers in working with a computer, a person ceases to perceive the computer as some difficult circumstance.

Today, many employees use smartphones asworking tool, and their computer skills are very weak. At the same time, they consider themselves digital and developed. Actually, it is not. They just learned how to perform some operations on the phone, having lost their computer skills.

The next important point is the ability to work in Excel. In fact, it is like an introduction to the world of computers. If you can type well, work in Excel, create various linked tables, then it will be much easier for you. Well, then you can move on to individual tools: design, financial and others.

This is where a lot of people might ask:"Why should I understand the computer so deeply - I'm not a programmer!" But it's an incredibly cool skill to understand how something works. You need to try to understand what you interact with and work with. Look a little deeper than others.

A modern profession is far from always an analogue of a digital one. Modern means relevant, and now not only the work of IT specialists is relevant

Checklist of basic computer skills:

  • Work in different operating systems (Windows and Mac), the ability to install and reinstall them. Understand what an operating system is.
  • Possession of general information about browsers and archivers. Know which discs are for what.
  • Ability to connect and communicate with a computer different equipment, as well as a server.
  • Knowledge of basic information about audio and video services, the ability to use them.
  • Working in text and some graphic editors: creating graphs, charts, tables, charts, files, templates, presentations.
  • Ability to operate with various analytics and provide it. Possession of some systems with which you can program some algorithms.
  • Installing different applications and understanding how one version differs from another.
  • Ability to understand the user manual. If you do not know how to do something, then open the manual. But then again, few people can figure it out.
  • Search for information on various forums. If a question arises, you need to be able to find a specialized forum and experts on it who can give an answer.

Owning the "base", it is easy to take on new tasks. For example, a specialist needs to install several electronic SIM cards. He had never done this before. But since he understands the computer, he completed the task in a few minutes. Because he has the skill to complete any task in the digital world.

Technology VS employees

A modern profession is far from always an analoguedigital. Modern means relevant, and now not only the work of IT specialists is relevant. For example, the most modern and sought-after profession is actually a courier. Over the past five years, these employees have increased many times over, and the demand for them is high.

This is not to say that all non-digital professions are earlyor later become unnecessary. There will always be a need for them. It is unlikely that any technology will make the same couriers unnecessary in 10-15 years. It is also doubtful that delivery robots will fly in cities by that time.

The development of technology in any country is veryunevenly depending on the region. Try driving 100 km from Moscow or from New York: what kind of digital world is there?! And sometimes in large cities of countries with an average or even high level of IT development there are no banal things, even problems with Internet coverage are possible.

People's habits must also be taken into account. For example, there are technologies that allow you to make a purchase in a store without a seller. But not everyone uses them. In a store, even in a fairly large European city, 10 people can stand at a regular checkout, while no one can stand at a self-service checkout. These cash registers are very convenient, the purchase takes seconds. There is no need to scan every item - it determines what is in the basket. But no one uses them, and there is a queue for a live cashier. And there are far from 80-year-old grandmothers standing in it.

Avoid major changes

Today the whole world is moving towards automationprocesses. This means that more and more information systems are appearing in which you need to be able to work. Therefore, digitalization has overtaken you or will only overtake you, even if you do not change your profession.

Many industries that have never beendigital, are now closely linked to technology. For example, medicine, retail, tourism, education, creative areas. Today, for a designer or artist, IT is an important addition or even part of their work.

But if IT is not as developed in your industrystrongly, it is hardly worth making a serious bet on teaching digital skills and spending energy on getting a digital specialty. Moreover, when choosing it, it is easy to make a mistake. The reason is that the choice is so huge that it is very difficult to decide on it. Training courses and programs have very powerful marketing. And under its influence, a person often cannot understand whether he really wants this, or whether he was simply “sold” the course competently.
