Why Nikita Khrushchev was going to drop an atomic bomb on Turkey

Life explained that Khrushchev was given threats of atomic war against other countries and what was the plan for

attack on Turkey. Discuss

Nikita Khrushchev, when he came to power, almost immediately began to threaten other states with atomic weapons. And it worked. Thus, he solved many problems in foreign policy.

So, in the 1950s, he supported Egypt in the waragainst Israel. When he received documents from the leaders of France and Great Britain, who were on the side of Israel, he threatened to drop a nuclear bomb on their capitals. It worked.

Khrushchev did exactly the same thing in 1957, whenEgypt and Syria decided to unite. He stated that the USSR would be forced to intervene in an attack on Syria. In October of the same year, Defense Minister Malinovsky described two options for war to the leader of the Soviet Union: with each state separately or with all of them at once. In the first case they were going to send a bomber with an atomic bomb, in the second – the use of such weapons only against the most aggressive countries. And the first state where they planned to drop a bomb was Türkiye. This was explained by the fact that Soviet intelligence officers had already reported that the country was ready for an active offensive. Khrushchev was offered to attack the capital of Turkey – strike a warning blow. Khrushchev only ordered the preparation of atomic weapons for use.

But in the end there was no attack on Turkey. The reason was a call from US President Dwight Eisenhower, who promised to reach an agreement with his closest NATO allies. And the States really managed to influence Turkey and Israel – the war didn't happen.

But at the same time, the scheme for the invasion of Turkeywas kept in a safe by the military until the early 90s. In the 1980s, military experts assessed Malinovsky's plan and concluded that an attack on Turkey would allow the Soviet army to win a few weeks, during which Egypt and Syria would have united. And with regard to atomic weapons, it is reported that the strike should have been inflicted only on Ankara.
