Why teetotalers often die before moderate drinkers

Scientists at the University of Greifswald have found out whether alcohol is useful for prolonging life, because teetotalers

often die earlier than moderate drinkers. There is no alcohol for health, and the latter lends itself to a logical explanation.

The results of scientific work were published inPLOS Medicine. As part of the study, experts studied data on 4028 adult citizens of the country. Back in 1996-1997, when they were between 18 and 64 years old, the participants filled out a questionnaire that revealed their state of health, as well as their relationship with alcohol, drugs and other bad habits. The data on the mortality of these people, obtained in the course of 20-year observation of them, were also analyzed.

All this made it possible to refute the opinion thatalcohol reduces the likelihood of premature death. It turned out that the early death of teetotalers was not due to the fact that they stopped drinking alcohol, but the reason why they did it. In particular, it turned out that people with diseases that reduce their longevity often quit alcohol. This is what influences the difference in mortality between teetotalers and moderately drinking people.
