Wikipedia founder reveals whether GPT will trust to write an article in the encyclopedia

In an interview with Daniel Humbury in London's Evening Standard, Wales discussed the problems inherent in this

However,   the founder of Wikipedia notes that GPT can be used to triple the number of articles in an online encyclopedia and "it will not increase the number of articles in an online encyclopedia."running costs of more than £1,000 a year."

According to Wales, Wikipedia would "come in handy" by using a large language model (LLM), such as GPT, to compare multiple articles and look for fragments that contradict each other.

He also considered the possibility of these LLMs writing entire pages in an encyclopedia.

We're still a long way from saying, "ChatGPT, please write a Wikipedia article about the Empire State Building."   It's certainly closer than it was two years ago.

Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia

One possible scenario is to have the AI look for gaps in Wikipedia, potentially useful pages that are still being written. The LLM can attempt to create summary records for them using information from the Internet. However, Wales stresses that "Wikipedia's entire reputation is based on a perception of accuracy" and that this is currently a huge problem for LLMs such as GPT.

"GPT has a tendency to just create things out of thin air, which is very bad for Wikipedia. We have to be very careful about it," concludes the founder of Wikipedia.
