Worst in 10 years: Samsung Galaxy S21 line sells worse than its predecessors

Although Samsung leads the smartphone market, the South Korean company is not doing as well as it could

appear. Every year, the flagship models of the Galaxy S series are selling worse and worse. Many believed that the Galaxy S20 line had reached rock bottom. As it turns out, sales still have room to fall.

What happened?

In January of this year, the company introducedSamsung Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 + and Galaxy S21 Ultra smartphones. Now the South Korean media are reporting that the 2021 lineup is the worst in terms of sales in the last ten years, i.e. starting with Galaxy S5.

In the first half of the year, the company sold only 13.6 millionsmartphones. That's 20% less than the Galaxy S20 series for the same period last year. But the Galaxy S10 smartphones sold almost one and a half times better (+ 47%).

Part of the decline in sales volumes can be attributed toto the coronavirus pandemic. Partly because flagship smartphones have stopped making revolutions every year, and users do not see a significant difference between the new generation of smartphones compared to the previous one and do not want to change their phones every year. But Apple was able to increase iPhone sales during the same time. Another reason for the weak performance was cited by the Korean media as Chinese manufacturers, who are actively producing top-end solutions with interesting characteristics, often at more affordable prices. Another reason that influenced the situation could be the emergence of a separate category of premium (for now) smartphones with folding screens, and some loyal buyers simply switched from the S-series to them.

Let us remember that, despite all this,According to the results of the 2nd quarter of 2021, Samsung ranks 1st in the world in smartphone sales, with a market share, according to Canalys estimates, of 19% and an annual increase in unit sales of 15%. Counterpoint says Samsung sold 58 million smartphones in Q2 2021. Xiaomi is in second place (17%, 53 million units), Apple is in third (14%, 49 million units).
